Overview
I built a custom CNC mill starting from a sub-$100 3018 kit, reinforcing the frame with plasma-cut steel around MGN12H precision linear rails to keep backlash and wobble down. I diagnosed and tuned out the tolerance issues until it could reliably cut aluminum, after pricing out commercial alternatives that started north of $2,000. I still use it to machine parts for other projects.
What I learned
- CAM programming and G-code generation in Fusion 360, sent to a GRBL-based 3018 via Universal G-code Sender
- Built the machine frame from 20/20 aluminum extrusion reinforced with plasma-cut steel, assembled around MGN12H precision linear rails to keep backlash and wobble to a minimum
- Diagnosed and tuned out backlash/tolerance issues to reliably cut aluminum, after commercial CNC mill alternatives started north of $2,000
- Machined real parts for other projects, including hardware for HORIZON's TVC mount
